Liverpool remain optimistic about securing a deal to acquire Xabi Alonso, despite recent reports suggesting that the midfielder is leaning towards a move to Bayern Munich should he depart Bayer Leverkusen, according to Football Insider.

Last week, Sky Sports reported that Alonso has a preference for joining Bayern rather than returning to Anfield, should he decide to leave the current Bundesliga leaders.

However, Football Insider claims that “the Reds are ready to “break the bank” to get him.

“Liverpool are working on a deal to appoint Alonso behind the scenes as they draw up the succession plan ahead of Klopp’s exit – which was announced in January.”

Bayern currently sit 10 points behind Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen side, who have maintained an unbeaten record in the league this season.

Having played for both Liverpool and Bayern in the past, Alonso faces a tempting proposition to return to either club.

However, there’s also the possibility that he might choose to continue leading Leverkusen in the Champions League.

Both Liverpool and Bayern are also interested in Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi an alternative option.

Liverpool’s new sporting director Richard Hughes is a strong admirer of the Italian manager.

Hughes previously attempted to bring De Zerbi to Bournemouth when Scott Parker departed two years ago, only for complications arising from the ownership to derail the move.

Liverpool’s preference is for a young manager who can develop and thrive at the club.

They are also seeking someone who espouses an attacking style of football and possesses a commanding personality.

Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky, meanwhile is preparing for the likelihood of Alonso’s exit.

“That’s our wish and dream, for him to stay, but no-one would be angry or argue if he wins the Bundesliga and decides to go another route,” said Hradecky.

“We see on a daily basis that he loves to be in Leverkusen.

From another point of view: How can you make it better than this season?

“There’s a lot to ponder but he’s enough of a gentleman to make the right decision and only he knows what’s best for him.

“But the atmosphere he’s brought in Leverkusen, we didn’t have it before.

I think it comes from the way he has experienced football.

“In Madrid, Liverpool – that’s the level we strive for every day.

The hype is definitely justified.

“It’s the best Leverkusen team I’ve experienced.
