Liverpool have taken proactive steps in preparing for the post-Jürgen Klopp era by welcoming Michael Edwards back to the club.

Edwards, the former sporting director, played a pivotal role in the club’s successes during Klopp’s tenure.

Now, in his new role as Fenway Sports Group’s chief executive of football, he will have broader responsibilities.

Recent reports suggest that Sporting Lisbon head coach Ruben Amorim is emerging as a leading candidate to succeed Klopp after former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso confirmed that he will be staying at Bayer Leverkusen.

The 39-year-old has garnered widespread acclaim for his managerial prowess in Lisbon.

Currently, he is on track to secure a second Portuguese title with Sporting, further bolstering his credentials.

Amorim recently admitted that his own son wants him to stay put at Sporting.

“Both,” he responded, as quoted by O Jogo, when asked what supporters would prefer.

“Even my son asks me for both things!

“But the important thing is for Sporting to be champions.

That’s what the fans want and that’s what we fight for.”

Despite confirming his intentions to stay at Sporting, Portuguese outlet Correio da Manhã claims that “Rúben Amorim may leave Sporting in the summer, but he intends to continue working with Gyokeres next season.”

Viktor Gyokeres has been in fine form for Sporting this season, scoring 36 goals and providing 16 assists in 44 appearances across all competitions.

The 25-year-old is attracting interest from several clubs and Amorim will be keen to bring him to Anfield.

Correio da Manhã further stated that “Taking charge of Liverpool, Amorim will have already defined a list of five potential reinforcements for the attack, with Gyokeres being the priority target (he has a release clause of 100 million euros)?

“The rest are Nico Williams (Athletic Bilbao), Pedro Neto (Wolves); Florian Wirtz (Leverkusen), and Michael Olise (Crystal Palace).”
