'Something different': Pundit suggests Liverpool tactic he 'doesn't remember' Klopp trying before

Pundit Craig Burley has a suggestion for Liverpool – a new tactic. The ex-Chelsea player thinks it’s time to try ‘something different’.

After four home defeats on the bounce, Liverpool almost certainly need to change things. That’s not easy for Jurgen Klopp, though.

Injuries leave him without the necessary options to make simple changes. It would have to be something drastic.

ESPN pundit Craig Burley has a suggestion, though. The Scot thinks a change of formation could suit the Reds – one he hasn’t seen before.

“Maybe the one criticism of Klopp,” he told ESPN. “I don’t remember him ever trying to find a scenario and say ‘we’re going to have [Trent] Alexander-Arnold and [Andy] Robertson as the wing-backs and we’re going to have a back three’.

“Giving [Ozan] Kabak and somebody else a bit of protection by putting a [Jordan] Henderson back there as a third centre-back or as a sweeper.

“Just to try something. It’s quite clear, more often than not, when they play these guys at the back, they’re getting exposed.

“I don’t remember – certainly off the top of my head – [Klopp] changing the shape of that back line. You might like a back four but this injury list is so bad that you have to try something different.”

What RTK has to say

You do have to go back a while but Klopp has tried this before. There was a game away at Brighton in December 2017 where Liverpool went three-at-the-back.

It was actually stranger than that. Klopp’s defensive trio had Dejan Lovren as the central figure but two midfielders either side – Gini Wijnaldum and Emre Can.

How did it go? Liverpool won 5-1 away from home.

Maybe Klopp could try something like this again – it’s certainly not the worst idea in the world. Honestly, we just want to see something new.

Our own suggestion is 4-2-3-1 but we’re not against the 3-4-3 plan. Kabak, Ben Davies and Fabinho as a trio? Why not? It can’t be any worse.
