Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has played down the severity of the injury he sustained during the Europa League match against Atalanta.

The Dutchman dislocated a finger but was able to continue and subsequently featured in the match against Fulham over the weekend.

Van Dijk completed the entire duration of the game as Jurgen Klopp’s side secured a 3-1 win at Craven Cottage.

Liverpool’s victory have propelled them to the same points total as Arsenal, who lead the Premier League standings on goal difference only, and one point ahead of Manchester City, who have a game in hand on both Liverpool and Arsenal.

“In the first minute against Atalanta it was pointing in the wrong direction,” Van Dijk explained, via the Liverpool ECHO post-Fulham.

“It’s dislocated, yeah.

It’s only a finger!”

Liverpool take on Everton in the highly anticipated Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Wednesday night.

The Reds are in need of points to stay competitive in the Premier League title race alongside Arsenal and Manchester City.

Virgil van Dijk expressed confidence that his team can string together a series of strong performances and results following a couple of recent wins, which have helped Liverpool regain momentum.

With only five matches remaining in the season, there is no room for error.

“We had six games to go and Fulham was a very big one.

We go again in three days, big game, Merseyside derby.

“We want to win it.

Now we need to recover and take responsibility to be ready for Wednesday.”
