Arne Slot has emerged as the frontrunner on Tuesday after numerous reliable reports confirmed Liverpool’s interest in the Feyenoord manager.
Liverpool’s hunt for a manager has taken plenty of twists and turns yet.
In the immediate aftermath of Jurgen Klopp’s announcement in June, Xabi Alonso was the frontrunner and certainly the fan favourite.
However, the Spaniard publicly declared his intention to remain at Bayer Leverkusen next season amid plenty of speculation from not just Liverpool – but Real Madrid and Bayern Munich as well.
Then, Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim emerged as a potential candidate due to his body of work at the Lisbon club.
But West Ham interest, likely couple with other factors, mean that the Portuguese manager is now firmly out of the picture.
As reported by Paul Joyce today, Feyenoord boss Arne Slot is now believed to be the focus of Liverpool’s efforts.
Slot has been steadily building a reputation with the Dutch club.
Slot, who was born in the Netherlands, played midfield for teams like NAC Breda and Sparta Rotterdam during his brief but fruitful playing career before turning to coaching.
Stints in various roles at PEC Zwolle and AZ Alkmaar eventually saw him being picked up by Feyenoord.
After leading Feyenoord to their first Eredivisie title in six years 2022/23, the 45-year-old has managed to add another medal to his collection in KNVB Cup final last weekend.
And speaking post-match, the 45-year-old was not exactly keeping his cards to his chest.
What did Arne Slot say?
Speaking after his side’s 1-0 win over NEC Nijmegen to hoist the KNVB Cup on Sunday, Arne Slot appeared to want to keep his options open.
After Feyenoord won its first championship in six years last season, Slot’s profile skyrocketed.
It was widely rumored that he had declined the chance to manage Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.
Verifying those rumors and seeming top open himself up to option in the summer, he said (via Foot Mundo):
“Last year I made the choice to cancel a deal with a club in the Premier League.:
“It is often said in the media that I am ambitious, but I think I am also loyal.”
“I worked at Cambuur for three years, wanted to complete four years at AZ [but was fired] and this is my third season at Feyenoord.”
“I have said before that if a club comes along that I find very interesting, I will listen to them.”
“I can say that the Premier League club I was in contact with pays a little better?
But is that relevant now?
“What else should I look to do at Feyenoord?”
“John de Wolf [assistant] just said that I should not think that I have already won all the prizes because I do not have the Johan Cruyff Shield [Dutch Super Cup] yet.”
Arne Slot has a contract until 2026 and it is believed that there is no release clause included in his deal, leaving the future in his own hands.
