Bayer Leverkusen just clinched their first Bundesliga title, yet Xabi Alonso remains uncertain about its implications for the future.
The 42-year-old orchestrated the team’s historic league victory, sealed with a resounding 5-0 triumph over Werder Bremen on Sunday.
Leverkusen boast an unbeaten record this season and are now eyeing further success in the German Cup and the UEFA Europa League.
Alonso’s accomplishment in ending Bayern Munich’s 11-year reign in the Bundesliga has garnered attention from some of Europe’s premier clubs.
Both Bayern and Liverpool, where Alonso previously played are in search of new managers for the upcoming season.
Despite the speculation, the Spaniard has affirmed his commitment to Leverkusen.
However, his recent remark during the celebration of his team’s title win has left many intrigued.
“When I feel that the team is behind me, the feeling that they want to believe, it’s much easier,” he said.
“That was my great enjoyment, that I had the feeling that the team was really committed, and once you have that it’s much easier.
“I don’t know what it will mean for the future, but at the moment it feels pretty great.”
Xabi Alonso earlier claimed that he believes staying in his current role is the optimal decision.
As he continues in his first significant managerial position, he emphasizes that there is still considerable work to be done at Leverkusen.
“It has been a season with a lot of speculation regarding my future,” Alonso said
“I wanted to use the international break to reflect a little bit better and to take a decision.
“Last week, I had a good meeting with Simon [Rolfes, the club’s sporting director] with Fernando [Carro, CEO], when I informed them of my decision to continue being coach of Bayer Leverkusen.
“For sure all the decisions, you need to analyse well, and I tried to take the right ones, I tried to take the ones that come in a natural way, and at this moment I feel this is the right place for me to be to develop as a coach.
“I am a young coach, but I have to feel it, and right now I feel that this is the right place.”
