Image Credits: Imago ImagesAlessandro Bastoni is not your typical centre-back.The 27-year-old Inter Milan defender has spent the last several seasons redefining what a modern centre-back looks like, and both Barcelona and Liverpool have been paying close attention.Bastoni came through Atalanta’s academy before Inter Milan spent €31 million to sign him as a teenager in 2017 — a significant fee at the time for someone so young.After loan spells back at Atalanta and Parma to sharpen his game, he returned to the San Siro and became a cornerstone of Antonio Conte’s title-winning side.Under Simone Inzaghi, he has grown into one of the best defenders in Europe.His trophy cabinet backs that up as he has won the Serie A twice, in 2021 and 2024, lifted the European Championship with Italy at Euro 2020, and was named Serie A’s Best Defender in both 2024 and 2025.Inter have also reached the Champions League final twice during his time there, in 2023 and 2025.What makes him so attractive to elite clubs is his ability to do things most centre-backs simply cannot.This season across all competitions, he has registered two goals and six assists — the highest assist tally among Inter’s defenders.He completes passes at around 88%, has created 12 big chances, and has been dribbled past just nine times in the league.He ranks in the 97th percentile for touches among centre-backs and frequently carries the ball from his own half into the final third.Liverpool have had him on their radar for months.With Virgil van Dijk ageing and the club searching for a left-sided centre-back of the highest level, Bastoni fits the profile perfectly.Reports from January and as recently as April 2026 confirmed that he was on their shortlist, alongside players like Nico Schlotterbeck.His contract with Inter runs until June 2028, and the club consider him untouchable, meaning any transfer would likely cost north of €80 million.Liverpool’s hopes of signing Alessandro Bastoni have taken a serious blow.According to journalist Matteo Moretto, reporting on MARCA, Barcelona have already secured an agreement with the player’s camp over personal terms, putting them firmly in the driving seat in this transfer race.Moretto was direct in his reporting, “They’ve been negotiating with Bastoni’s representatives for months and there’s already an agreement on the contract; they just need to find common ground between Inter’s demands and Barça’s offer.”Bastoni is understood to favour a move to the Spotify Camp Nou should he leave Italy, which significantly weakens Liverpool’s position despite their long-standing interest.The remaining obstacle is the transfer fee.Inter Milan are demanding €70 million and have made clear they do not want to accept players as part of the deal.Barcelona, however, are reluctant to spend that kind of money in a single transaction and are pushing to include a player in any agreement to bring the cost down.Moretto confirmed that angle too, “Barça wants to include players in the deal, and one player Inter really likes is Héctor Fort,” he noted, referring to Barcelona’s teenage right-back who has drawn genuine interest from the Italian champions.Whether Inter soften their stance on a player-plus-cash structure remains to be seen, but the gap between the two clubs is real and will need to be bridged before anything is finalised.For Liverpool, the situation is uncomfortable.They need a top-level left-sided centre-back, and Bastoni is close to the perfect candidate.But with Barcelona having already done the hard work of agreeing personal terms, and with the player himself reportedly preferring the Spanish move, Anfield may need to turn its attention elsewhere this summer.
