A BBC journalist has cast doubt on whether Liverpool can complete a deal for a German wonderkid this summer window. Image Credits: Imago ImagesLiverpool’s recruitment team have once again been linked with one of Europe’s most exciting teenage prospects, as reports this week suggested the Reds are in talks to sign highly-rated midfielder Kennet Eichhorn.Sky Germany reported on Monday that Liverpool is making serious moves for the 16-year-old Hertha Berlin talent. The youngster is expected to leave Hertha BSC this summer, with a release clause believed to be in the region of €10–12 million. However, while the interest may be genuine, it appears that Liverpool may struggle to get a deal over the line this summer.According to BBC journalist Dale Johnson, Liverpool – and any other English club – simply cannot sign Eichhorn this summer due to post-Brexit regulations. The key issue is his age.
At just 16, Eichhorn falls below the minimum age required for international transfers into English football, which is now set at 18.This is a significant shift from pre-Brexit days, when Premier League clubs could snap up top European prospects at 16, often before they had signed professional contracts in their home countries. That pathway is now closed.Johnson also clarified that clubs cannot work around the rule by signing a player and loaning them out until they turn 18 – a strategy sometimes used in South American deals.
Otherwise, the earliest Liverpool could realistically complete a move would be July 2027.Worth mentioning that Liverpool cannot sign Kennet Eicchorn this summer. He’s 16. He can join a club in any other major European league now, but post-Brexit you have to be 18 to sign for an English club. And you can’t sign the player now and loan them out until they are 18.— Dale Johnson (@DaleJohnsonBBC) May 26, 2026 Kennet Eichhorn
