Liverpool have seen a fourth goalkeeping coach leave in the space of three years. Xavi Valero returned to Anfield last summer for a second spell with the club after previously serving as part of Rafael Benitez’s backroom between 2007 and 2010.

But Valero is now departing after just 12 months with a return to his native Spain understood to be the driving factor in his surprise decision to step down. His decision was communicated to Liverpool chiefs before the end of the previous campaign and according to the Athletic, is not tied to the sacking of Arne Slot.

Valero’s latest period on Merseyside came through succeeding Fabian Otte, who originally replaced John Achterberg the previous summer, as head of goalkeeping. Along with former Brazil international Claudio Taffarel, Liverpool have now seen a quartet of goalkeeping coaches departing across three consecutive summers.
