Pep Guardiola is not the only member of Manchester City’s staff that has left the club at the end of the 2025/26 season. Image Credits: Imago ImagesAn era is drawing to a close at Manchester City, and you could feel it in the air last night as the club staged what was effectively a goodbye to the Guardiola years at the Etihad. The spotlight was firmly on Pep himself, but it quickly became a wider reunion of the modern City dynasty, with icons like Vincent Kompany and Fernandinho returning to the pitch they helped turn into a fortress to join the tributes. With Guardiola gone and his trusted lieutenants in Bernardo Silva and John Stones moving on, City are bracing for a summer of upheaval behind the scenes as a new regime prepares to take over. It’s been widely reported that former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca will be taking over at the helm.
The Italian will be bringing his own backroom staff to the club, and as well as result Manchester City have officially confirmed that former Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders along with four other staff members will be departing.A City statement read:“Pep Lijnders, Kolo Toure, Lorenzo Buenaventura, Manel Estiarte and Xabi Mancisidor will all leave the Club.”“Lijnders arrived last summer as assistant coach to Pep Guardiola and helped the Catalan as we lifted both the League Cup and FA Cup.”“Everyone at City would like to thank all five members of staff for their hard work and dedication and wish them the very best of luck in the future.”For Liverpool supporters, Lijnders’ move to City last year always carried extra needle. The Dutch coach had spent nearly a decade at Anfield as Jurgen Klopp’s right-hand man, helping deliver the Premier League and Champions League before leaving in 2024 for a short-lived crack at management with Red Bull Salzburg. When he resurfaced on Guardiola’s staff, many Reds fans were uneasy watching a figure so closely associated with Klopp’s Liverpool jump straight into the inner circle of their biggest domestic rival. It would have hurt a lot more if Lijnders had helped City to yet another Premier League title, but thankfully that was not the case. Reds fans will no doubt be keeping a keen eye out on what’s next for the Dutchman.
