Everton have unveiled a new tribute in memory of the Hillsborough disaster. Wednesday marked the 37th anniversary of the unlawful killing of 97 Liverpool supporters during the 1989 FA Cup semi-final at Sheffield Wednesday’s ground.
Since the tragedy, the Blues have stood shoulder to shoulder with their neighbours and installed a memorial to the victims and survivors at Goodison Park in 2015. Ahead of Sunday’s first Merseyside derby at Hill Dickinson Stadium, a ceremony took place for both clubs and families to pay their respects outside the South Stand.
Sir Kenny Dalglish, who was manager at the time, and Ian Rush laid floral tributes alongside Everton counterparts Graeme Sharp, Ian Snodin and Graham Stuart. Representatives of the Hillsborough families were joined in attendance at the ceremony by the respective CEOs of both clubs, Billy Hogan and Angus Kinnear.
